CANOPY HOUSE EXTENSION
ALICE SPRINGS 2021
This two storey addition was designed to make the most of some beautiful, established trees on the large Old Eastside block. On the ground floor, a new living area creates more space for this family with two soon-to-be teenage kids. It allows the young teenagers a separate space to inhabit that is still connected to their parents, and with the flexibility to adapt as they grow up. Two wide steps bridge the floor level difference from the original house, while helping to delineate the space, reduce dust and dirt entering the new extension and provide a casual sitting spot.
Upstairs, a new parents wing consisting of bedroom, balcony, ensuite and walk in robe provides sweeping 180 degrees views to the tree canopies and other natural landmarks beyond.
The location of the existing house on the block meant the only option was a west facing extension, which required careful management of the harsh afternoon sun. External operable louvres fully shade the upper level glazing, while a wide deck on the lower level extends the living space while keeping it cool and shaded.
